From its days as a major trading hub in the 16th century to its status as a vibrant, multicultural city, Antwerp's story is woven into the very fabric of its streets. It’s really easy to rent an (electric) bike here and we explore the Grote Markt, the city's historic main square, and marvel at the Renaissance architecture of the City Hall and the guild houses. A visit to the Plantin-Moretus Museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the world of printing and publishing in the Renaissance era. This UNESCO World Heritage site, once the residence and workplace of the Plantin and Moretus families, now houses an exceptional collection of historical printing equipment and manuscripts. Walking through its halls, we are transported back in time, imagining the clatter of printing presses and the meticulous work of typesetters. The museum not only celebrates the city's significant contribution to the printing revolution but also highlights the importance of knowledge and learning throughout Antwerp's history.

Our historical journey continues as we meander down the narrow, cobblestone streets, each turn revealing more of the city's rich past. We stumble upon hidden courtyards and secret gardens, remnants of medieval times. The Vlaeykensgang, an alleyway dating back to 1591, offers a quiet escape from the bustling city and a glimpse into the daily life of Antwerp centuries ago. As we pass by the majestic Steen Castle, Antwerp's oldest building, we are reminded of the city's strategic importance in medieval Europe. The castle, perched on the banks of the Scheldt River, has been a fortress, a prison, and now a museum, each role adding to its historical tapestry.

In the bustling Het Zuid district, we witness the seamless blend of Antwerp's historical roots with its modern, artistic pulse. Here, contemporary art galleries and hip cafes coexist with stately 19th-century townhouses. This area exemplifies how Antwerp respects its past while embracing the future, a trait that endears the city to visitors and locals alike.

Our historical exploration of Antwerp reveals a city that has skilfully preserved its past while dynamically moving forward.
