Nestled along the mesmerizing Dutch coastline of Noordwijk, the Grand Hotel Huis ter Duin stands tall, a testament to timeless elegance, history, and luxury. For anyone venturing to this part of the Netherlands, the majestic structure is hard to miss. But what lies within its walls and its surroundings is a tale that begs to be told and experienced.

The Grand Hotel as a landmark

Tracing its origins back to 1885, Huis ter Duin was a vision of Noordwijk's then-mayor. He envisaged more than just a fishing village; he saw potential for a grand seaside retreat. The hotel's inception was indeed a significant transformation for the village. Today, it’s not just a hotel; it’s a landmark. Surviving the ravages of time and even a major fire in 1990. The architecture, though renovated, still whispers tales of its storied past, echoing the footsteps of its many distinguished guests, including Barack Obama and members of the Dutch and Belgian Royal Family. The Dutch national soccer team, too, has found solace and preparation within its walls before their big matches. Noordwijk isn’t just about its luxurious resorts or the calm beaches. It's a perfect blend of nature's beauty and vibrant urban life, making it an excellent destination, also for families with teenagers.

As we step into our recently renovated rooms, the blend of old-world charm and modern luxury is palpable. The space radiates warmth, comfort, and an undeniable sense of history. But it isn't just the room and the nice presents that captures our attention. Throughout the hotel, the colourful Pierrot paintings by George van Herwaarde seems to playfully beckon, each canvas telling a unique story. It’s no wonder the owner is so captivated by them.

For us, while the indoors exudes luxury, the outdoor is a tranquil escape. This trip our youngest daughter is accompanied by a friend. For them the beach is a playground. The first night we start at Breakers. This beachhouse offers a vibrant atmosphere that perfectly complements its beachside location. The restaurant exudes a laid-back, contemporary vibe, with stunning ocean views and a cozy interior that strikes the right balance between casual and sophisticated. It's an ideal spot for families with teenagers. As for the food, Breakers delivers an array of delicious options, from fresh seafood to mouthwatering meats and enticing vegetarian dishes. The eclectic menu ensures that even picky eaters will find something to savor.

Fun times at the beach

Shifting from the natural charm of Breakers, our next dining escapade is at Restaurant Le Terrasse. The sophisticated ambiance here is evident from the chic outdoor seating and tastefully done interiors. The menu is impressive, offering a modern take on traditional Dutch cuisine. Dishes, whether it is the succulent meats or the fresh salads, are a testament to the chef's expertise and innovative approach. The extensive wine list further elevates our dining experience, with choices that paired perfectly with our meals.

While engrossed in our culinary delights, we are once again treated to a mesmerizing sunset. The setting seems even more intimate at Le Terrasse, making the evening memorable. The efficient staff plays a significant role in this, ensuring timely service, refilled glasses, and a pleasant dining experience throughout.

Furthermore, the Van Diepeningen Lounge is a sanctuary of elegance and warmth. Whether you're sinking into its plush chairs with a freshly brewed coffee and homemade delights or raising a glass filled with sparkling concoctions, this lounge ensures an experience infused with luxury. Drawing inspiration from global cuisines, the kitchen team crafts dishes that are nothing short of art, marrying unexpected tastes with classic techniques. After such indulgence, seeking out the hotel's other offerings can be quite the adventure.

A prime example is the hotel's bike rental service. Bicycling is a revered Dutch tradition, and there's no better way to immerse oneself in it than by navigating through Noordwijk’s dunes on two wheels. The terrain, albeit challenging at times, rewards with mesmerizing vistas at every turn. The trails, diligently marked for guidance, lead adventurers to various vantage points, revealing the North Sea in all its majestic grandeur. For teenagers, this presents an exhilarating blend of adrenaline rush and an intimate encounter with the Netherlands' renowned cycling ethos.

Just loving the sand dunes and beach here

Located in Noordwijk itself, the Space Expo offers a unique perspective into the vast cosmos. Recognized as Europe’s first permanent space exhibition, it's not just a museum but an adventure. Here, teenagers can get up close with space suits, satellites, and even a real Soyuz spacecraft. The interactive exhibits allow them to understand the challenges of space travel, making it an ideal spot for both education and entertainment.

Noordwijk and its vicinity have a rich tapestry of history that dates back centuries. The ancient monasteries, some of which are still operational, offer a tranquil and enlightening experience. The Sint-Jeroenskerk, a church with roots tracing back to the 13th century, stands as a testament to the region's rich architectural heritage. The intricate stained glass, old frescoes, and the aura of quiet contemplation provide a contrast to the hustle and bustle of modern life. A short drive from the hotel lies the world-famous Keukenhof Gardens. Known as the ‘Garden of Europe’, this is one of the world's largest flower gardens. While it's most famous for its spring tulip displays, it offers a vibrant burst of colours and fragrances throughout the year. Even if your teenagers aren’t into flowers, the sheer scale and beauty of Keukenhof are bound to impress.

For a dose of adrenaline, the Duinrell Amusement Park in nearby Wassenaar is the place to be. With thrilling roller coasters, water rides, and the Tikibad water park boasting the largest collection of water slides in Benelux, it promises a day filled with excitement. For families that prefer a more active exploration, the walking trails alongside Noordwijk’s coastline offer an unparalleled experience. The well-marked paths, interspersed with dunes, forests, and the omnipresent sea, provide a feast for the senses.

While Noordwijk’s serenity is entrancing, the allure of Amsterdam is hard to resist, especially when traveling with teenagers. Just a short drive away, Amsterdam offers a myriad of experiences. Our personal highlight here is the “Upside Down” museum. Tailored for the Instagram generation, this museum is both quirky and interactive. It gives visitors a chance to look at the world from a different perspective – quite literally! The girls can’t get enough of the creative photo ops, and honestly, neither can we.

We recently added a lovely puppy to our family. Still a bit too young to bring along yet, but we can't wait to let the dog experience the hotel. There is a special floor for staying with dogs. From the 1st of September until the 1st of June, you are allowed to walk your dog down the beach.

Whether it's the allure of the North Sea, the historical charm of Huis ter Duin, or the culinary masterpieces, there's a story waiting to be discovered by every visitor. For us, it is a narrative of unforgettable memories, and we can't wait to add more chapters on our next visit.
