As for this trip we visit the United States and we love the outdoors and adventures, it’s difficult not to include the state of Colorado in our itinerary. Located in the western part of this vast country it is known for its stunning natural beauty, rich history and vibrant culture. From the majestic Rocky Mountains to the rolling prairies, Colorado is a state that truly stole our heart.

We also have a favourite when it’s comes to the many recommendable towns and cities, being Durango. A vibrant home to over 20,000 residents, and beside us, also broadly considered one of the most beautiful and historic cities in Colorado. Durango was founded in 1880 because of the arrival of the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad. The city quickly became a hub for transportation, commerce and mining, and it soon became a thriving town with a population of thousands. The city's success was due in large part to its location near the San Juan Mountains, which were rich in minerals such as silver and gold.

Views from the lodge

Another important aspect of Durango's history is its connection to the Wild West. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, Durango was a popular stop for cowboys, prospectors and outlaws. It was also a popular destination for tourists, who were drawn to the city's scenic beauty and rugged wilderness. This period of Durango's history is still remembered today and the city has embraced its Wild West heritage by hosting several events each year that celebrate its history and culture.

Throughout the 1900s, Durango continued to grow and evolve. The city became a popular destination for tourists, and it was also home to several important industries, including mining, agriculture and tourism. During this time, the city also underwent several important renovations, including the expansion of the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, which is now a popular tourist attraction.

To experience this all-in comfort, we stay at Tamarron Lodge a less than 10 minute-drive to Durango. As we arrive, we are surprised by its beauty. The lodge is designed to blend with its natural surroundings, with beautiful architecture and design elements that are inspired by the mountains. The lodge's rooms and suites are spacious and well-appointed, and they offer great views of the mountains and the nearby valley. Guests can choose from a variety of room types, including traditional rooms, suites and even private cabins, to ensure that they have the perfect accommodation for their stay.

Our two-bedroom (with two-bathrooms) is unique as one of the few custom multi-bedroom properties in the property. We have access to the fitness and amenities of the Glacier Club, a world-class golf and residential community. The club features two championship golf courses designed by world-renowned golf course architect Tom Weiskopf. In addition to golf, the Glacier Club offers a variety of other recreational activities and amenities. The club features a swimming pool, tennis courts and a fitness center. With our kids, especially the pool is one of the amenities we thoroughly use during our stay. For those who prefer to relax and unwind, the lodge also offers a wide range of spa services, including massages, facials and body treatments.

This unit has been remodelled with a new kitchen, electrical appliances, all new furniture and two bedrooms. The charm of this cosy apartment is undeniable. It was renovated with a hip and fun interior and artwork and colours to make us feel right at home.

As we all do not feel entirely fit, we mostly stay in or around the comfortable lodge. For our next visit we for sure must visit the already mentioned most notable sight in Durango: the historic Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. This historic railway, which has been in operation since 1882, takes visitors on a scenic journey through the mountains. It was originally built as a transportation route for silver and gold miners, as well as supplies and equipment, to and from the mines in the surrounding mountains. The railway operated for over 70 years before it was finally abandoned in the 1950s. In the 1980s, the railway was restored and opened to the public as a tourist attraction.

Today the railroad takes passengers on a journey through the historic mining town of Silverton, over high mountain passes, and past waterfalls and mountain lakes. The railway runs on a narrow gauge track, which means that the rails are spaced closer together than on a standard gauge track. This allows the train to navigate steep grades and tight turns, making it possible to reach remote and breath-taking locations. The train ride seems to be a unique and unforgettable experience, taking passengers back in time to the days of the Wild West. The train is pulled by a steam locomotive, and the wooden passenger cars are fitted with comfortable seating and large windows. The tour is narrated by the conductor, who provides interesting and informative commentary about the history of the railway and the surrounding area.

The town of Silverton itself is also worth exploring, as it is home to a number of historic buildings and mining sites, as well as a variety of shops, restaurants, and museums. Visitors can learn about the town's rich mining history at the Silverton Historical Society Museum, which features exhibits on the town's mining history, geology and early settlers.

Another notable sight in Durango is the Animas River, which runs through the heart of the city. This beautiful river provides a variety of recreational opportunities, including fishing, kayaking, and rafting, and it is surrounded by scenic hiking and biking trails. In addition, the Animas River is also home to the Durango Fish Hatchery, which is a popular destination for those interested in learning about the area's wildlife and conservation efforts.

20 Minutes driving down we are having great pleasure at the Wibit Aqua Parc. It’s an inflatable water park featuring interconnected inflatable structures that include obstacles, slides, trampolines and other challenges. You can climb, slide and jump around the park, which is designed to provide a fun and challenging experience for all ages. In addition, Lake Nighthorse offers a variety of other recreational opportunities, such as fishing, boating, kayaking and paddleboarding.

A bit further (one hour driving) you’ll find Mesa Verde National Park. It offers a range of activities and tours that can also appeal to teenagers. From exploring ancient ruins to hiking and camping, there are plenty of opportunities for adventure and learning in this beautiful park. Cliff Palace for example is an ancient puebloan cliff dwelling located in the park. It was built by the Ancestral Puebloans more than 700 years ago and home to an estimated 100 people. It’s one of the largest and best-preserved cliff dwellings in North America.

A little further away is the Four Corners Monument. It’s the only place in de United States where you can stand in four states at the same time: Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico. It’s a bronze disk embedded in a granite slab, so don’t drive there just for the monument. But if you happen to be in the Four Corners area, the area is known for its unique and stunning landscapes, including canyons, mesas and red rock formations.

For those interested in history, Durango is home to several museums and historic sites that are worth exploring. The Durango Discovery Museum is a popular destination for families and history buffs, and it provides an interactive look at the history of the area and the people who have lived there. The Durango History Museum is another great option for those interested in learning about the city's rich past, and it features exhibits on the local mining and railway industries, as well as the indigenous people who have lived in the area for thousands of years.

Finally, Durango is a great destination for those looking to enjoy a variety of outdoor activities. The city is surrounded by mountains, rivers, and forests, and there is no shortage of opportunities for adventure and exploration. Whether you're interested in hiking, biking or fishing, Durango is the perfect destination for outdoor enthusiasts of all stripes.
