Just when we think we know Bali, we discover a completely different side of the island — quieter, slower, and surprisingly luxurious in its simplicity. Tucked away on the north coast, far from the traffic and tourist trails, this beachfront villa redefines the meaning of barefoot luxury. This isn’t the Bali of beach clubs and infinity pools (though yes, there's still a gorgeous pool!) — it’s Bali as it once was: raw, relaxed, and rich in authenticity.
The villa itself is charming and comfortable, with wide open spaces and a tropical garden that spills straight onto a black sand beach. The sea here is dramatic — think crashing waves and powerful swells — so swimming is more about wave-jumping and bodyboarding than floating. For kids with energy, it’s a thrilling natural playground. The waves can be rough, so sea swimming requires supervision. For calmer waters, the villa’s lovely pool is our go-to — shaded in parts, surrounded by frangipani trees, and just steps from where we enjoy breakfast every morning.
Speaking of breakfast: it’s freshly prepared by two wonderful ladies who also take care of the housekeeping each morning. Every day starts with tropical fruit, pancakes or eggs, and that unbeatable feeling of not needing to do a single thing. This is a place designed for true relaxation — long mornings with books, lazy afternoons in the water, and barefoot walks on the beach with the villa’s sweet dogs (yes, one of them sleeps inside and becomes part of the family — something to know if you travel with young kids or allergies).
What makes this place even more magical is the view from the front of the house —rice fields stretching in front of the villa, dotted with coconut trees and framed by soft morning light. The owner had the foresight to purchase the land in front of the villa, meaning this view will remain untouched. It creates a rare sense of privacy and calm, and connects you instantly to the natural rhythm of local life.
One of our favourite moments? Ordering an in-villa massage from a local who comes straight to the house. It’s these little touches — thoughtful, authentic, and deeply relaxing — that make this destination special. And while it’s easy to settle in and never leave, there’s plenty to explore if you do. Renting a scooter or car opens up a world of nearby temples, villages, rice paddies, and a coastline that still feels completely undiscovered.
This is a different kind of family holiday. There are no kids clubs or Instagrammable cafés — and that’s exactly the point. It’s a place where days flow gently, where nature and comfort come together beautifully, and where kids find joy in sand, surf, and the simplicity of island life. While the house is wonderfully private, the region remains quiet — bring books, board games, and an adventurous spirit.
