Surrounded by the lush green rainforest of Payangan, deep in the heart of Bali, Hanging Gardens of Bali feels like a hidden temple—serene, mysterious, and alive with nature. Known for its world-famous tiered infinity pool and breathtaking jungle views, this exclusive resort offers a luxurious, immersive experience. We are here for a visit with our two teens (14 and 16 years old) and find the perfect blend of adventure, relaxation, and cultural discovery.
The resort itself is designed by renowned Balinese architect Popo Danes, known for his deep respect for local culture and landscape. His vision for Hanging Gardens of Bali was to create a retreat that blends seamlessly into the jungle, following the natural curves of the Ayung River valley. Rather than impose on the environment, the resort appears to emerge from it—built with local materials, steeped in tradition, and shaped by the philosophy of Tri Hita Karana, the Balinese belief in harmony between people, nature, and the spiritual. The result is a space that feels sacred yet luxurious, grounded yet otherworldly.
You truly are in the jungle here. Tropical birds call through the trees, leaves rustle softly, and if you’re lucky (we are!), a troop of long-tailed macaques might wander by, sometimes with tiny babies clinging to their mothers. We think our Two Bedroom Pool Villa must be on their daily route. It’s unforgettable.
Across the river, a short jungle hike leads to Dalem Segara Temple, a peaceful site that was lovingly restored in 2003 by the original landowner, just before the opening of Hanging Gardens of Bali. Thoughtfully positioned across the sacred valley, the temple still plays an active role in daily rituals. Every evening, a local man lights hundreds of small candles on the stone staircase, creating a breathtaking view from the resort.
Our villa is stunning: two spacious bedrooms, an elegant open-air bathroom, and a private infinity pool suspended above the valley. Everything here is beautifully designed with natural materials, local art, and a strong connection to the outdoors. It’s peaceful, luxurious, and refreshingly intimate.
Service throughout the resort is impeccable. The property is set on multiple jungle-covered levels, and a steep funicular-style lift connects the plateaus. Staff are always ready to accompany you up or down with a warm smile, which is especially appreciated when your villa (like ours) is on the lowest level.
Food here is another highlight. Breakfasts are a feast of freshly baked pastries, tropical fruits, poached eggs, and delicious Balinese mezze—a selection of small, savoury bites like grilled satay, roasted tempeh, or coconut-spiced vegetables. For culinary lovers, there’s a cooking class where you join the chef on a local market visit before preparing a full Balinese meal yourself—an activity that’s fun for both kids and adults.
Don’t skip the afternoon high tea either. Served on one of the upper terraces, it includes delicate sweet and savoury treats with views stretching over the jungle canopy.
One evening, we’re lucky to witness a traditional Balinese ceremony, complete with gamelan music, dancers in intricate costumes, and a masked performer who tries to make the audience laugh. It's a glimpse into the spiritual and artistic heart of Bali.
You can also opt for adventure activities, like jungle hikes and mountain biking, but we choose to visit Ubud for a day. A charming town, slightly more touristy but still full of character—with small boutiques, art galleries, and great cafés. We happen upon a colourful Balinese procession on the main street, which halts traffic but adds such beautiful energy to the day.
Back at the resort, the main infinity pool is iconic for a reason. Terraced into the hillside, it seems to float above the valley. You can even reserve it in the evening for a private family swim under the stars, with candles and dinner on the deck—an incredibly romantic and memorable experience.
And for full relaxation? The spa is tucked into a secluded part of the resort and offers traditional Balinese treatments, perfect after a day of jungle exploration or sightseeing.
Hanging Gardens of Bali is more than a resort; it’s an experience. An extraordinary mix of luxury, nature, and culture, perfectly tailored for families with older kids looking for something truly special.
