This four-star hotel La Rive is in a beautiful location in the lovely and romantique valley of the Upper-Sûre. And not to forget: at the foot of the 150-meter-high hill with the impressive medieval castle of Bourscheid. The ideal place for a quiet stay in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.
With an area of 2,586 square kilometers, Luxembourg is one of the smallest sovereign states in Europe. It also is one of the least-populous countries in Europe, but by far the one with the highest population growth rate and one of the richest countries in the world.
Hotel La Rive river view
At the time of our stay the hotel is named Hotel Theis, known as a modern and attractive hotel. It still is a place to relax and find peace, since its sheltered from traffic and noise. Now the hotel offers 19 standard rooms and 13 luxury cottage suites. Pets are allowed. The rooms have views over the river or the forest. If you choose a cottage suite, then you are staying close to the rippling water of the Sûre river, with your own terrace facing it, so we would surely recommend it. The suites are spacious and clean.

While staying at the Hotel La Rive you will like the leisure and recreational facilities which includes a tennis court, volleyball court and private fishing. The hotel has its own small wellness center featuring a sauna, aroma bath and Turkish bath, fitness and solarium. It has no pool, but you children might want to take a fresh dive in the river on warm days. And young children will enjoy the playground of the hotel, while you can enjoy a perfect lunch on the terrace. Or use the childcare service of the hotel to have a wonderful dinner together. Cocoon Hotel La Rive famed gourmet restaurant serves a wide range of regional delights and a seasonal à la carte menu. They also offer a child menu until 12 years. We are staying here at the birthday of Angela and celebrate it by choosing a nice bottle of wine from the hotel’s extensive wine cellar.
It seems there’s a playroom inside as well nowadays, just as a table tennis table. With older children looking for entertainment be aware the hotel is in a remote area. But you might find it lovely to explore the nature with them. Nature Park Upper-Sûre is situated in the ancient hilly uplands of the Ardennes, the park is marked by deep valleys, wet meadows, steep forested slopes and a high farmland plateau. You can access it by walking, by bike or horseback. Tyr one of the beaches or you might as well go for sailing, diving, boating or surfing. Or take a guided nature tour by solar-powered boat and discover Luxembourg's largest drinking-water reservoir from a new perspective. In winter, with good conditions you can ski here.
Perfect nature
Being this close to the castle of Bourscheid we might as well visit it. The ruins were classified as "historical monument". And it hosts a small museum telling the history of the castle and the lords of Bourscheid. The castle's night illuminations create a fabulous atmosphere; your children will love it. Audio guides are available in 7 languages to service guests from Luxembourg, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Great Britain, Spain and Russia.
The town of Diekirch, known for its war museum, is a 10 km drive from the hotel. The cities of Clervaux and Vianden are 25 km away. The beautiful castle of Clervaux is built high on the rock, rises above the houses of the village that are built around it in the shape of a horseshoe. Obviously, we like photography, so the Family of Man exhibition is perfect for us. Having toured the globe, exhibited in over 150 museums worldwide, the final integral version of the exhibition was permanently installed in Clervaux Castle in 1994. Since its creation, having attracted over 10 million visitors, The Family of Man has entered the history of photography as a legendary exhibition. In 2003 the collection was inscribed in the UNESCO Memory of the World register. In Vianden you can find the only chair lift in the Grand Duchy, which allows you to get from an altitude of 230 to 440 m and to enjoy a gorgeous panorama over the romantic valley. And what about a toy and little train museum in Colmar-Berg, 16 km away?
